ABOUT THAT DOJO LIFE

That Dojo Life is not a fight school but a self defense and fitness club. We believe that martial arts has lost many of the traditions in the recent years. Things like the teachings of discipline, respect, learning how to follow instruction and sometimes even fun for the kids.

We have gotten away from the root of martial arts and the reasons for joining, we lost our kids to fighting instead of self defense, we’re continuing to lose them to electronics etc. The best thing you can do for your child is put the in any sport activity and keep them there and let them know that quitting is never an option!

A Message from Coach Rob

When my parents first put me in martial arts I was about 4 years old and of course like any other child it was like the first day at school. They believed that the arts would teach me the things that I spoke about above Respect, discipline etc.. They also believed in living a healthy lifestyle, being able to defend myself should something ever occur , make new friends and to keep me busy so that I would stay of trouble and it worked! I can even remember my first sensei’s name, Sensei Howard from Karate.

Since then I have trained under a lot of different instructors, learned a lot of techniques, different cultures, made so many good friends and met some great people along the way. Even till today i’m still learning other types of arts and taking the time to master it. The learning never stops!

That Dojo Life to me means we live the martial arts way. The thing we learn from martial arts can be taken and applied to our everyday life. I think that’s really beneficial.

Growing up I watched a lot of Kung Fu flix and Martial Arts movies. My father and I would stay up late on Friday nights to watch Black Belt Theater. I loved Jackie Chan, Jet Lee, Chuck Norris and I wanted to be Bruce Lee.

When I was thirteen my mom and I took a Kung Fu class together. Yeah, my mom was super cool! It was Siu Lum Pai “Tiger-Crane” Style Kung Fu. I learned a lot in that class and I really enjoyed it. It taught me self defense skills, disciple, focus and gave me a great workout.

I continued to take different martial arts throughout my life including, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun and more… What I have learned is that the more you train and learn the more you realize you have so much to learn. Never stop learning!
